The relation between in-plane fiber waviness severity and first ply failure in thermoplastic composite laminates

The influence of in-plane fiber waviness on the first ply failure quasi-isotropic thermoplastic composite laminates was investigated. mode and stress at were studied by using a four-point bending test an end-loaded (ELB) test. experimental results confirm that no undesirable concentration due to load introduction occurred in ELB test, thereby supporting use this as alternative method measure failure. experiments demonstrated severity affects compressive damage development. initially decreases with increasing maximum angle levels off starts exceeding 20°. These reinforce hypothesis from previous research which suggests wavy strength is less sensitive changes larger angles. Furthermore, it found kinking dominant for up about 45°. No kink band observed regions angles above 45° when there another region lower same specimen. This means not necessarily initiated location where most severe.
